A male Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) was peacefully enjoying one of the many lakes in Beacon Hill park, Victoria when this shot was captured. The beautiful green head is a male trait, while females have brown and white feathers. The males are most colourful during september, the beginning of duck courtship (mating season). This photo was taken right after the duck had done a headshake, a common display used to attract a male.
