This gray and red bird looks somewhat like an odd Northern Cardinal, but the more restricted red colour and the larger yellow bill are indicators of this being a different species. Pyrrhuloxias are restricted to southern Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. This male Pyrrhuloxia was a regular visitor to the feeder we had at our Arizona vacation spot in the Sonoran desert. Females are similar, but have even less red, and even that is a duller colour than what is typically on the males.
